Is there an agent to install on Windows and macOS to automatically inventory IT assets?

Currently, Reftab has an agent for Windows only that can be installed to automatically add Windows assets to your Reftab account.

Log into your Reftab account and click “Settings” > “Agent“. You will see instructions on how to both download and install the agent.

Agent Installation Instructions

In your Reftab account, on the Agent page, there are installation instructions. Please refer to these instructions on how to download the agent and options to install the agent. For example, there are explicit commands that you can copy to install the agent via command line.

Agent Connection Information and Field Mapping

The agent will maintain a connection to your Reftab account and automatically create assets. The agent will sync every 8 hours. The agent can populate chosen data such as: “serial number”, “hostname”, “geolocation” (if enabled on the device), “free storage space”, “model”, “User Principal Name” and more.

It is suggested that if you have Reftab configured with any of our device management integrations, (Intune, Jamf, Meraki, Lansweeper, Mosyle, etc..) don’t install the Reftab agent. Let those integrations keep asset up-to-date. The agent should ideally only be installed on Windows machines that are not managed by Intune, Jamf, Meraki, Mosyle, Lansweeper, etc…

Caveats to keep in mind when using the agent:

PLEASE READ

1) If a computer is already in Reftab as an asset, and then you install the agent on that same physical computer, please enter the Asset ID in the install wizard when prompted. By doing so, you’ll link the asset in Reftab with the agent instead of creating a new asset in Reftab.

  • If you do not enter an Asset ID in the install wizard, the agent creates an asset in Reftab using the guid of the computer as the asset ID. The guid is then used for future connections between Reftab and the agent.
  • However, there is a setting to “Match based on serial number field“. This setting, if turned “on” will look to update an existing asset if they share the same serial number. Turning this setting on avoids creating duplicate assets when installing the agent.

2) After the asset is created, you can edit the asset, including change the asset’s ID. The agent will still maintain a connection. The agent will continue to use the guid that is stored on the field level of the asset as the unique identifier. DO NOT MODIFY THE GUID on the Reftab asset. A new asset will be created if the guid is not found in your Reftab account on any existing assets.

3) The agent cannot check out assets to users.

Is the Agent a Network Discovery Tool?

The agent is not a network discovery tool. Unfortunately, at this time Reftab does not offer a network discovery tool. However, we do have an open API that you can use to work with other applications to gather data: Click here to view API documentation Alternatively, Reftab integrates with Lansweeper which can act as your network discovery tool and add assets into Reftab.
